Trainers in Grenada

On Monday, March 5th, our intrepid WAIT members Cathlene Bell, Lan Tsubata, Triton Marks and Mike Ferrete set out for the next WAIT destinations: Grenada and Trinidad! Their goal: to build and train new WAIT teams that will be able to continue spreading the message of abstinence before marriage in those countries. To be successful, they’ll need to reach out to the people and connect to their hearts, a task I’m sure they’re more than up to.

The first two weeks, March 5-19, they will be working in Grenada with Roddy Portelance (the Sudbury, Canada WAIT leader), his family, and Don LaLonde, the Windsor, Canada WAIT leader. Out of the 80,000 residents of Grenada, 118 were infected as of 2003. We hope to prevent the spread of HIV there.  Initial reports from the Team are exciting: a press conference the first day, a training with young ladies aged 15 to 17, and an itinerary with about 20 performances planned!

The final week, March 19-25, the WAIT trainers will fly to Trinidad, where they’ll be working with Rose Foundation director, Sterling Belgrove. Trinidad has 26,000 people currently infected, making it the 3rd highest HIV-prevalent area in the Caribbean. By starting a WAIT Team there we hope to arrest the growing epidemic and put a stop to anyone else receiving the virus.

Our members need as much positive energy as we can possibly send them, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Hope in your hearts that they will:

*Stay healthy and safe

*Develop deep connections with the local area and people

*Have total success in the outreach

Twenty is PLENTY!

Help WAIT multiply!

You already know how much WAIT has been doing to stop AIDS.  Now, we’re expanding to the nations that are hardest hit by HIV.  We’re now in Kenya, Grenada, Trinidad/Tobago, and have plans for South Africa, Zambia and beyond.  We are asking everyone (yes, even you!!!) to helpout with a $20 donation, (or more if possible!)  If we all pitch in together, we can fund the revolution against AIDS in the Caribbean, Africa and other nations.

Your donation is an investment in humanity, and will be multiplied many times over through the hard work of the WAIT volunteers.  That’s why we say “Twenty is Plenty!”

Washington AIDS International Teens

WAIT teaches people of all ages, races, religions, and cultures about the science of HIV. We advocate getting tested, living abstinent until a lifetime partnership, and good health care for those infected.  We teach through the performing arts and other talents and skills, including electronic media and communication. WAIT works with anyone wishing to stop to AIDS in their communities and across the globe.

Notes From All Over

The recent Kenya outreach has had a huge impact.  Some responses from our new college-age WAIT participants, who are rapidly multiplying and who are preparing to travel to the rural areas to offer additional training to the local teams we initiated there:

For full Kenya report, click here:

Everytime we meet, we offer a sincere prayer in groups of three.  We normally offer one minute of silence to try to remember those who are in the grip of death due to HIV and then reflect on why we are doing all this activity.  The Kenya team members are so determined that I cannot explain it in writing…From my own point of view, the only way that many teens and youths can be aware of HIV/AIDS and its dangers is through the WAIT programs….I am very grateful because every time I read your mail, I feel so inspired to do much better than I have done.”

--Willis Omondi, WAIT Youth Coordinator, Kenya

“Your clips are so sweet; in fact, I really loved them.  How is everyone?  We are doing cool…I am currently working at a street children rehabilitation center in Nairobi.  Can you write for me a recommendation letter?  I will really appreciate if you do that.  In fact, I introduced your programme there, and the children there really love it.  Ciao and God Bless you.”

--Vincent  Ochie, YFWP Kenyan WAIT member

Here’s a response from Ireland, to the UK WAIT leader Marshall De Souza, who brought a team of trainers to Dublin in February:

For the Full Ireland trip report, click here:

“I still keep on getting extraordinary positive feedbacks from coordinators of different youth groups that participated in your workshop shows.  Some of the young people witnessed the WAIT team show and are trying hard to practice what you’ve imparted to them, and they all feel that it’s really revolutionary!

“Two girls from Sheriff Youth Club decided to call off their dates that night after the presentation and they believed it was just providential for them to have done it.  The boys whom they were supposed to date were also present in the WAIT show and didn’t make any resistance to their girls as they understood well now what respect for others really mean and that if it’s really love that they feel for each other, they must be willing and can wait for the “right moment.”

“Some of the boys in the same club who tried to make advances to the WAIT team girls asking their contact numbers were impressed by the coherency and consistency of the girls when they received a simple no from them, and were told that they have to listen much better to the message that WAIT has just given them.  They understood that lifetime choices need sacrifices and discipline. They’re now asking me for help in order to maintain this new “light” that they have within them through your help!  Pity me, now I’ll have more work!

“Some of the minors that participated related to me that now they understand why some of their relations have HIV/AIDS. They understood that faithfulness to the partner is essential in married life or long-lasting relationships.  They are now engaging themselves a lot in sports so as not to have any idle moment for them to think differently from what you’ve imparted to them.”

--Robert Samson, Catholic Youth Care, Arran Quay, Dublin, Ireland

Response from Marshall about above message:

“I must say that reading your news did two things: 1) it brought tears to my eyes as I realized how important and powerful the WAIT message is; and 2) your testimonies really “puts flesh to the bone” as far as reports go.  Roberto, you and the WAIT team have really begin a revolution in Ireland. We can’t stop now!”

--Marshall De Souza, WAIT UK parent leader

Last but not least is the report from Aunt Grace Davin, about the response of the Syracuse New York Boys and Girls club program to the WAIT performance and mini-training last december :

“They are very interested in training and another presentation of WAIT.  He gave a couple of testimonies:

1)     When his group sat down to listen, they thought this is going to be “cheeky” (corny).  But found out it grabbed their interest and liked the program.

2)     One father, the next day, said to Matt, “What did you do to my son?”  Apparently, he came home excited about WAIT and his behavior was different.

3)     Matt (the director) said that he and his sister (who is in charge of the younger group) have been talking about how to get parents involved.  So Matt and I talked about trying to get parents to attend (the WAIT training) especially as the training implies commitment and any interest from the parents will enhance that.

“The Club wants to schedule 2 presentations and a training in April.  In summary, Matt and his friends are quite enthusiastic about WAIT and Matt sees the need for the message, but the kids too!”

--Grace Davin, Syracuse-NY WAIT coordinator
