DC WAIT has been very busy lately, with 4 new Year of Service members --Wendy Wang from Connecticut, Jasmine Roth from New Hampshire, Rachel Curtin from Nebraska, and coming this week, Insung Harbour from Georgia. We also have our previous year of service members, Harmony Becker and Ilseuk Masuda (both from Ohio) staying on this year to help with the new members and all the work the team has been doing.
In August, we had a lot of people coming and going. Lan went to Korea for the month, and Ilseuk and Harmony went to Ohio for a couple weeks to help out the WAIT team. Near the end of the month, Jasmine arrived, and around the same time "Exteme Home Makeover" moved into the neighborhood. The team had the opportunity to perform in front of the crowd before they all shouted "Move that bus!".
We had a lot of performances this September. Our first one was on the 6th, at the NuSoul Festival in Alexandria, VA. We were a little short on people, since everyone in the LightSmith video crew had gone to New Jersey for a video shoot. This was also the first performance for some of our new members. Despite some technical difficulties, the team did a great performance, and we inspired a lot of people.
The next weekend we had three events. On the 11th, we had a shop to shop fundraising, where a lot of new members did "performance fundraising" for the first time, and met a lot of great people. The next day, Saturday, we had an event at the Abstinence Regional Health Summit at the University of Maryland, where Aunt Kate spoke on the panel.
The other event was a performance in DC on the National Mall, at the Annual NCNW Black Family Reunion Celebration. We had a full performance there, and afterwards the organizer told us all to get on stage and dance together with the audience to Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Even though almost no one actually knew the dance, they definitely had fun, and may even have possibly gotten on TV. While we waited for the van, we performed for the passersby, and Wongil improvised a great acoustic version of "WAIT for me".
