Our last performance of September 2009 was on the 25th at New Hope Academy, the school which of a few of our own WAIT members currently attend.
We were invited by one of the teachers/WAIT parents to do a full powerpoint presentation for the 6th grade and up, followed by the full performance for the 5th grade and up.
The performance had several highlights, mainly any time the New Hope population recognized one of their own breakdancing, rapping, or punching out an evil HIV clone.
It became obvious that Hashim, Marcus, and Won-shim of New Hope Academy held the attention of their classmates with their passion and energy. Their influence showed after the performance too when the sign up sheet was passed around, as well as through all those who came up to us directly with interest in joining the WAIT team.
Talking to some of the students afterward, I found out that many of them had already received some HIV/AIDS education in several of their health classes. They had seen many pictures and heard many facts.
But as expected, most had never seen or heard a message quite like ours. Many told us about their love for music, dance, writing, etc. and how they hoped to be able to use these things in a positive way someday.
Overall, it was a great success, and we heard many good things from both teachers and students even days afterwards.
